Puppy Thoughts

My husband has wanted a dog for sometime, and now that I am finally warming to the idea, the exhaustive search for the right type, age, etc dog for us begins. I expect this to take some time. And the puppy sitting is truly the final test before taking the plunge ourselves. If you have much dog experience, what type tends to be really good with little ones? We've had cats in the past, but currently do not own any and have no plans for new cats in our home in the future.

Today, I laid around with a migraine and was grateful everyone behaved themselves.

Mutts make the best pets. Pound puppies are so appreciative of being rescued!

You'll have a lot to consider getting a pup.
Go to a website about getting puppies and they will have some good advice. I agree with Jody, a pound pup, but make sure you get history. Abused animals pick up some ingrained habits that don't always mesh well in busy families.
My boy currently has a Bichon/Terrier cross.
My altime favorite.... we are looking for another right now, Bouvier de flanders.
Not for your urban/weather environment though.
The best dog I've ever had.

Not much dog experience here, but I'll try to send someone your way who could help. She even lives in Phoenix, how about that!

You have to take into consideration what type of lifestyle you have and then you will deduce what dog will be right for you and your family. Puppies are a lot of work so you need to be very patient and have time to train them. Dogs require exercise and after a long day at home alone are not only anxious to see the owner but to also get out for exercise. Having a dog is a big responsibility and at times can be costly. Not to scare you away but this is the reality and why many pups at 6 and 9 months of age end up in the pound. A dog should be considered part of the family and not something that can be dropped off at the pound when the novelty has worn off. You may want to spend sometime at the dog park observing the various dogs and speaking with owners.
My dog is now handicapped and it has changed both of our lives immensely. I went into getting a dog a little naively and have learned a lot; most especially that dogs are your bestfriend and they deserve the same in return.
Do a lot of research. I agree with Jody, many of my friends have rescued dogs from the pound and they are the most pleasant ones I know. I rescued mine from the pet store at 6 months and although she is the love of my life she came with many health issues and has cost me a lot of money. Furthermore she was terrible to potty train and is very unsociable around other dogs and people that she does not know. So stay away from puppy stores!!
Best of luck. Dogs will enrich your life.
