Lighting the Way into Springtime

Do you still have your Christmas lights up?
I do. Not because I'm trying to make some sort of statement. I still have them up because they are a bit of a pain to take down. Which is probably why anyone still has them up. I plan to take them down tomorrow.
I have several neighbors who put up lights only about a week before Christmas. They then took them down the day after. All that work for a weeks worth of enjoyment. Why do it at all?
There is more to it I suppose. Maybe they wanted lights up for a holiday gathering of some sort, but otherwise it didn't really matter to them. I don't know.
I remember a house down from mine that had white lights in the trees all spring long. When I was 18 or 19, a date was driving me home down that way and he decided to comment on the lights. He thought it was horrible that they still had lights up. He really took offense that they would have Christmas lights on their trees in March. I told him I thought they were beautiful. I thought they were perhaps trying to hold onto the spirit of the holidays and that was a wonderful thing.
He was an electrical engineer, a very logical person. He saw them not taking down the lights as a lazy thing. They were just too lazy to go out and take them down. This didn't make sense to me. If that were the case, they could just leave the lights off and nobody would be the wiser. I think they were making a statement of some sort, or perhaps just really liked the lights.
It never would have worked out with that man and me. He was too cemented in his logic and I was too prone to enjoy my imagination. In fact, I'm not all that sure what he even saw in me. Maybe I was just really cute. LOL..
So do you still have lights on your house? If someone has lights on in the middle of January, do you think them lazy or that they are hanging on to the spirit of the season? Sad to say, I am now more in the thinking them lazy category myself. Because after all, when my lights stay up into February that is usually the cause.
Ah, I am losing the fantasy of my youth.
I do hope we can all hold onto to a happy spirit into springtime. Maybe if it would help, we should all leave up those Christmas lights. We wouldn't be lazy if we have a reason!

I love the look of white lights in trees! Restaurants do it to look pretty, so why not houses?
But, my lights are down. They were really easy to take off, though.
I love the picture!
My parents used to leave the tree up until the sixth of January for the full "Twelve days of Christmas". I remember my Dad making idle comments about our neighbours... something like,
"Come Boxing Day, everyone has their tree in the garbage... sheesh..."
Mind you, there were years when our tree didn't go UP until the 24th.
Around here we celebrate Winterfest in the dreary days of January and early Februrary. Folks will leave their lights up for that on occasion... you're not considered a weirdo.
I was thinking just now that maybe I should turn my Christmas lights on in July... wouldn't that be cool? It would be a statement if nothing else...
Anon.
I just love the bright cheerful look of lights. Art everywhere. I wish more people would put them up and leave them out (and on!) longer. I love all the colour. Except for the people who use white. Why bother? White lights are *everywhere*. So boring, so lame, so...colourless. :P
Now when people still have them up in July, and they haven't been plugged in since December, that is just sad and wasteful...
